You can see a great deal of Budapest from a tram window, but the small social details are what make you feel welcome rather than merely passing through. This Budapest local etiquette guide is for those moments: ordering coffee, entering a shop, using the baths, and knowing when a friendly gesture is appreciated.
Hungarians are often warm, funny and wonderfully helpful once conversation begins. At first, however, everyday interactions can feel a little more formal than visitors from Britain or North America expect. A calm greeting, a little patience and an awareness of the setting will take you a long way.
In smaller shops, cafés, waiting rooms and lifts, it is polite to acknowledge people when you arrive. You do not need fluent Hungarian. A simple jó napot – meaning good day – is an excellent all-purpose greeting during the day. In the evening, jó estét works well. When leaving, viszontlátásra is the formal goodbye, although a friendly szia is common between people who know one another or in relaxed, younger settings.
Do not worry about perfect pronunciation. Most local people will appreciate the effort, especially if you follow it with a smile and a polite question in English. Starting with “Hello, do you speak English?” rather than launching straight into a request is a small courtesy that changes the tone of an exchange.
Hungarian has formal and informal forms of address, so it is best to let the other person set the level of familiarity. With staff, older people and anyone you have just met, a polite and slightly reserved approach is the safe choice. First names may come quickly in casual situations, but there is no need to force instant friendliness.
Budapest’s coffee culture can be leisurely, whether you are sitting at a grand café table or standing at a neighbourhood counter. If you have chosen a table, do not feel pressured to rush away the moment you finish your drink. At the same time, in a busy small café, it is considerate to avoid occupying a table for hours if you have only ordered one espresso.
When eating out, check the bill for a service charge before adding a tip. Many restaurants include one, often shown as szervizdíj. If it is already there, an extra tip is appreciated but not expected. If service is not included and you were happy with the meal, around 10 to 15 per cent is a normal guide.
One detail catches out plenty of visitors: tell the server the total amount you want to pay before the card terminal is processed. For example, if the bill is 9,000 forints and you would like to leave 1,000 forints, say that you would like to pay 10,000. It is less natural to add a tip after the payment has gone through than it is in Britain.
At more traditional places, staff can seem brisk when the room is busy. This is not necessarily unfriendly. A direct manner is often simply efficient, and good service may be quieter than the chatty style some travellers expect. If something is wrong, ask calmly and clearly. You are far more likely to get a helpful response than by making a scene.
In supermarkets and food markets, weigh loose fruit and vegetables if the section requires it, then place the sticker on the bag before reaching the till. This varies by shop, so look at what local shoppers are doing. At market stalls, ask before handling delicate produce, antiques or handmade items.
Queueing is generally orderly, but not always as visibly structured as it is in the UK. Watch the flow rather than assuming there is a single line. At a bakery or busy counter, a quick “who is last?” gesture or question can prevent confusion.
Keep your voice at a moderate level in enclosed spaces, particularly on public transport, in residential courtyards and late at night. Budapest is a lively city, but residents live around the places visitors come to enjoy. That is especially worth remembering when leaving bars in the inner districts or returning to your accommodation after dinner.
Budapest’s trams, metro and buses are easy to use, and a little awareness makes journeys smoother. Let passengers get off before you board. Offer your seat to an older person, someone who is pregnant, or anyone who clearly needs it more than you do. Keep bags close to you at busy times rather than placing them on an empty seat.
If you are using a paper ticket, make sure it is validated where required. Inspectors can be thorough, and a visitor’s honest mistake may still result in a fine. With a travel pass or digital ticket, have it ready before you pass through the gates or meet an inspector.
Escalator etiquette is straightforward: stand on the right and walk on the left. It is a small rule, but commuters notice when the left side is blocked. On the longer metro escalators, hold the handrail and keep children close.
Taxis are best booked through a reputable company or ordered by your hotel, restaurant or guide. Agreeing a clear pick-up point and checking the meter at the start removes unnecessary stress. If you are paying by card, it is sensible to confirm this before setting off.
The thermal baths are one of the city’s great pleasures, but they work best when everyone treats them as shared spaces rather than pool parties. Shower before entering the pools, wear the required swimwear and keep splashing to a minimum. Speak softly in relaxation areas, saunas and steam rooms, where people have come to switch off.
Bath rules differ by venue and may change between pools, so read the signs rather than relying on assumptions. Some sauna areas have particular customs around swimwear and towels. If you are uncertain, ask a member of staff instead of copying the nearest person.
In churches and other places of worship, dress modestly, silence your phone and avoid walking around during a service. Photography may be permitted in some places but not others. Signs matter, and so does timing: even where photographs are allowed, a quiet moment of reflection is not the right time for a posed picture.
The same goes for memorials and locations connected to difficult personal histories. These are not backdrops. Take photographs only where appropriate, keep voices low and give other visitors space.
Budapest invites photographs at every turn – the river views, tiled roofs, yellow trams and small details in courtyards. Still, a good picture should not come at somebody else’s expense. Ask before photographing market traders, performers, families or anyone who is clearly the subject of the image.
Be especially thoughtful with children and with people who may be vulnerable. If somebody indicates that they do not want to be photographed, simply thank them and move on. For street scenes, wait for a clear moment rather than stopping abruptly in a narrow pavement or doorway.
A local guide can be particularly useful here. On a photowalk or sightseeing photoshoot, you can find striking viewpoints without blocking busy routes or spending half your day working out where the light falls.
Hungary uses the forint, and card payment is widely accepted, though carrying a little cash is still practical for small purchases and market stalls. When paying with card, choose forints rather than an unfamiliar currency conversion if given the option. It usually gives you more control over the exchange rate.
Alcohol is part of social life, particularly over a long dinner or a toast, but being loudly drunk in public is not admired. If someone proposes a toast, make eye contact and say egészségedre – roughly, “to your health”. It is a lovely word to know, but a simple “cheers” with a smile is perfectly acceptable too.
Smoking remains more visible on some terraces than many British visitors are used to. Indoor smoking is restricted, but outdoor seating can be mixed. If smoke bothers you, ask for a table away from it rather than assuming every terrace will be smoke-free.
The best etiquette is rarely about memorising rules. It is about noticing the pace of the place you are in and responding with kindness. Greet people, do not demand speed, respect shared spaces and stay curious when something feels unfamiliar.
A few Hungarian words and a considerate attitude will open more doors than a perfectly planned itinerary. Give the city the same attention you hope it will give you, and even ordinary moments – a morning coffee, a tram ride at dusk, a chat at a wine bar – can become part of the holiday you remember most.

I had an amazing photoshoot with Gabor in Budapest! He was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and accommodating from start to finish. He worked with me on a scheduling change without any stress, picked me up directly from my hotel, and even did an extra shoot there which I really appreciated. Not only are the photos stunning, but he also shared so much history and insight about the city along the way. He helped with poses, and even taught me how to use the tram, which made the rest of my trip so much easier. I'm so happy I did this, it was one of the highlights of my trip!+8

Gabor was a highlight of our cruise stop in Budapest. We were there on the 24th of December and unfortunately many places were closed because of the Christmas holiday. However, Gabor was able to find a few places that we were able to visit to taste local delicacies. It was great having a local perspective and Gabor was a wealth of knowledge. We appreciated Gabor’s hospitality and would highly recommend his tours to anyone visiting Budapest!

We couldn't be happier by hiring Gabor to capture the precious moment for our family in Budapest. Gabor is not only a great photographer but also a knowledgeable tour guide who taught us so much about the history of Budapest and Hungary. He is very flexible to work with and I really appreciate that even our reserved time is up, he didn't rush to finish the session and spent another hour just to hit the spots that he intended to take our pictures. Although we are not in a rush, he worked so hard to send us the edited pictures in less than 48 hours which was amazing. I felt that I didn't only find a good photographer and tour guide, but also made a good friend in Hungary. Highly recommended!!!

We were visiting from Sydney for a five day visit to Budapest. Gabor is an amazing tour guide. We wanted a locally connected tour guide and he was certainly that! He was easy going, relaxed, a thorough historian who spoke excellent English. We walked and talked around for more than 3 very interesting & entertaining hours exploring Budapest visiting: * Heroes Square (Hősök tere), * the Museum & Library of Hungarian Agriculture (Magyar Mezőgazdasági Múzeum és Könyvtár) * Magyar Mezőgazdasági Múzeum és Könyvtár * St. Stephen’s Basilica * Buda Castle Precinct * Reteshav, Strudel House….first & best strudel in Budapest At the end of our tour, we were reluctant to leave him to go on our next walking food tour and invited him to come along with us 🥹 but he kindly refused. Even after our tour, he was helping us with recommendations via texts for dinner venues, which were excellent choices. Give Gabor a call, he will tailor a bespoke and personalised Budapest tour for you that won’t cost the earth. You won’t be disappointed!

Gabor is definitely worth booking for the sightseeing tour. He is very knowledgable about Budapest/Hungarian history. He is willing to adjust with what his guests want during the tour. We chose a photo-centric tour and he knows alot of good spots to take photos whether a postcard material shot or your portrait on the most interesting spots in Budapest. It’s also a plus that he has got a good sense of humor. Thank you Gabor, we enjoyed the tour alot. Henyr, Winnie
