Castle Hill is where Budapest feels most theatrical. The climb from the river is part of the experience, although the funicular is a good option if you would rather save your energy for walking around the district. At the top, Buda Castle gives you broad views across the Danube, while the surrounding cobbled streets, small squares and quieter corners make this area more than a single photo stop.
Allow time to wander beyond the main gates. Early morning is particularly lovely here, before the busiest day-trippers arrive. Late afternoon also works beautifully, when warm light reaches the rooftops of Pest and the hill becomes calmer again.

The best approach is to arrive with curiosity rather than a shopping list. Look at the paprika displays, notice what locals are buying, and try something freshly made if the queues are manageable. Afterwards, walk into the surrounding streets rather than immediately moving on to the next headline sight.
