It is worth setting expectations carefully. Not every gate is open, and not every courtyard is appropriate to enter. These are often private homes, not open-air museums. A respectful discovery is about noticing what the city offers, rather than treating residents’ spaces as a backdrop for a hurried photograph.

Courtyards can produce lovely images because the light falls differently throughout the day, but a photograph should never be more important than the people who live there. Early morning and late afternoon often bring softer light, while a cloudy day can make faded colours and architectural details particularly striking.
If you are travelling as a couple or with friends, resist the urge to turn every stop into a long photo session. Choose one or two scenes that genuinely catch your eye, take your picture, then carry on. You will notice far more when you are not viewing every doorway through a screen.
A courtyard route is best treated as part of a wider neighbourhood walk, not as a hunt for a fixed set of secret addresses. Gates can be closed, renovation work can change access, and the most interesting moment may be something completely unplanned: a little workshop sign, a beautiful staircase glimpsed through glass, or the smell of lunch drifting from a family kitchen.
That uncertainty is part of the charm. A rigid itinerary works well for timed tickets or a river cruise. Courtyard discovery needs breathing room.
