The yellow tram rattling along the Danube is one of those Budapest moments you will remember long after your holiday. It is also a genuinely useful way to get between major sights. This Budapest transport guide is here to make the practical side easy, so you can hop on with confidence rather than studying a ticket machine while your tram disappears around the corner.
Budapest is large enough that you will use public transport, but compact enough that walking remains part of the pleasure. The best days usually combine both: walk through a neighbourhood, take a tram or metro across town, then slow down again when there is something worth seeing.
The city’s public transport is extensive, frequent and generally straightforward once you know the basic logic. The metro is quickest for longer distances, trams are often the most scenic choice, buses fill the gaps, and trolleybuses serve several central and residential areas on the Pest side.
The Danube divides the city into Buda and Pest. Buda is hillier, greener and home to many of the classic viewpoints. Pest is flatter, busier and easier to cover on foot. Trams and buses are particularly useful when moving between the two sides, while the metro makes light work of crossing Pest.
For many visitors, the most useful lines are the yellow M1 metro, which runs beneath Andrássy Avenue; the red M2 line for east-west journeys; the blue M3 line; and the green M4 line. On the surface, tram 2 provides a lovely riverside ride on the Pest side, while tram 4 and 6 are dependable choices along the Grand Boulevard and run through the night.
Do not treat every journey as a race underground. A tram may take a few minutes longer than the metro, but it can give you grand bridges, river views and a far better sense of where you are in the city.
For a short stay with several sightseeing stops each day, a travel pass is usually the calmest option. It removes the need to buy and validate a separate ticket before every journey, and that is especially welcome when you are tired after a long day of walking or heading out for dinner.
If you expect to make only one or two journeys a day, single tickets may cost less. The trade-off is that ordinary single tickets are not designed for changing between vehicles, so a journey involving a tram and then a metro can require more than one. Read the conditions shown at the machine or in the official transport app before setting off, as ticket rules and prices can change.
Ticket machines are common at metro stations and larger stops, and they offer an English-language option. Card payment is widely accepted. You can also use the official Budapest public transport app to plan routes and buy eligible mobile tickets or passes. If you choose a mobile ticket, check whether it needs to be activated or scanned before boarding. A ticket sitting unactivated on your mobile phone will not help during an inspection.
Physical single tickets must be validated before you travel. On buses and trams, look for the small validation machines on board. At metro stations, validate before going down to the platforms. Keep the ticket until the end of the journey, even if you do not see an inspector at first.
Ticket inspections are real and can happen quietly and quickly. Inspectors may be at metro entrances, on platforms or on vehicles. It is not worth taking a chance: a fine is an expensive and frustrating souvenir.
A pass is often good value if you are staying centrally but plan to visit places that are spread across town, such as City Park, the Castle District, Gellért Hill and riverside areas. It is also ideal if you like the freedom to change your plans when rain arrives, your feet give up, or a café recommendation sends you to another district.
On the other hand, if your hotel is in the historic centre and your itinerary is mostly Parliament, the Basilica, the Jewish Quarter and the riverfront, walking may cover more than you expect. Buy for the way you actually like to travel, not for an imagined schedule packed from breakfast until bedtime.
Budapest Airport is outside the city centre, so your first transport decision arrives before you have even checked in. The right choice depends on your arrival time, luggage, budget and patience after the flight.
The airport express bus is the simplest public transport option for many visitors. It runs directly towards the central area and requires its own dedicated airport ticket, even if you already hold many standard city passes. This catches people out, so check the current ticket requirement before boarding.
A regular bus and metro combination is usually cheaper. It is sensible for confident travellers with light luggage, but it involves a change and can feel less appealing after a late arrival. A taxi offers door-to-door convenience and is worth considering for a couple, family or anyone arriving with bulky cases. Use the official taxi rank rather than accepting unsolicited offers inside the terminal.
If you arrive late, confirm the final departure times before relying on public transport. Budapest has good night services, but airport connections do not follow the same pattern as the city’s central tram routes.
Google Maps and the official local app are both useful for route planning, but look at the direction as well as the line number. On a tram platform, the display shows the final destination. Match that destination with the direction suggested on your map, particularly on broad roads where platforms sit on opposite sides of traffic.
On buses, press the stop button when your stop is next. On trams, it is polite to let passengers get off before stepping aboard, although busy vehicles can make this feel more like a practical necessity than a social ritual.
Metro stations are clearly signed with a large M. Escalators can be surprisingly fast, so stand on the right if you are not walking. The older M1 line has smaller, charming stations and short platforms, which is part of its character. It is not the place to expect lots of room for large luggage.
Most central stops are safe and well used, but normal city awareness applies. Keep a hand on your bag in crowds, avoid leaving valuables in an open pocket, and do not place your mobile phone loosely on a café table beside a busy pavement. You do not need to be anxious – just attentive.
Some journeys are practical, while others become part of the day out. Tram 2 is a favourite because it follows the Pest embankment with views across the river towards Buda Castle and the hills. Sit by the window if you can, especially in the softer light before sunset.
The Castle District is a good example of where transport choices matter. You can walk uphill if you enjoy a climb, but a bus will save energy for wandering the cobbled streets and taking photographs once you arrive. Similarly, a climb around Gellért Hill is rewarding, yet planning a bus for one direction can make the experience far more enjoyable.
For a relaxed evening, tram 4 or 6 is useful after dinner because it links many lively central areas. It is not a sightseeing cruise, but watching the city move past the windows is a fine way to understand its scale.
Rather than zigzagging from one famous sight to another, group your plans by area. Spend a morning on the Pest side, cross the river once, then explore Buda properly. This saves time, reduces unnecessary ticket decisions and leaves room for the things that make a city break personal: a bakery you notice on a side street, a quiet courtyard, or a viewpoint you want to photograph twice because the light has changed.
